Awoo Dixi Fam,
I've compiled a little list of my all time favourite shows that are currently streaming in the UK (sorry if they aren't available in your region, I imagine most will be though) for you to discover or rewatch in lockdown. At stressful times such as the world finds itself in now, I tend to find comfort in watching series that I already know and love; I really recommend doing this yourself if you are feeling anxious. It's okay to give your brain a break!
But if you're in the market for something new, I hope that I can recommend something you'll end up loving.
Here I've tried to include an eclectic little mix of all genres... I like a little bit of everything :)
Netflix
The Tiger King (Documentary)
We know, the chances are you've probably watched this. BUT WHAT EVEN. If you haven't yet caught up, do. It really is worth the hype. A rollercoaster of personalised condoms, running for president, running for governor, gay men marrying straight men, mysterious deaths, accusations of murder, cat ladies, mullets, accidental suicide, tiger cubs in suitcases, Las Vegas pimps, fraud... and tigers, of course.
White Collar (Drama)
One of mine and Amy's all time favourite series (I'm her Moz, she's my Neal), this is about a con artist who ends up working closely with an FBI agent solving cases in exchange for early release from prison. Sounds simple enough but it is really light hearted, sometimes funny, the characters are ridiculously loveable, there is a cute dog, and it's just a super easy watch that you can have on in the background while you do other things.
Sherlock (Drama) (*also on BBC iPlayer)
HI MY FAVOURITE SERIES EVER (BESIDES HANNIBAL) pls watch it.
Hannibal (Drama)
See above but exchange (BESIDES HANNIBAL) for (BESIDES SHERLOCK). It is one of the most beautifully shot series I have ever seen, a bit like a Kubrick film where every shot could be a photograph. But it can get a bit gory (he is a cannibal though so...) so if you are prone to squeamishness, perhaps skip this.
The Thick of It (Comedy) (*also on BBC iPlayer)
It's a cliché to say this now, but oh my god is this more relevant every single day. It follows the workings of a fictional Government department (the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship), and satirises the absolutely ridiculous things we have come to expect from government officials. This series started over 10 years ago and watching it then, you'd have thought, 'wow, imagine the world if the Government was actually this incompetent. Also lol'. Then 2016 arrived and was like, 'hold my beer'. Doesn't matter how many times I watch this; it is as painfully smart as it is funny, and has some of the BEST insults and one liners you've ever heard. "Please could you take this note, ram it up his hairy inbox and pin it to his fucking prostate," is just one shining example.
North & South (Period Drama)
If you love period dramas like Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Wuthering Heights, then get a box of tissues and watch this. Set in 19th Century Northern England, it shines a light on poverty, socio-politics, English society, women trying to make their way in the world, all with an initially reluctant but ultimately BEAUTIFUL romance. Prepare to have your heart broken and sewn back together again multiple times.
Other honourable mentions:
Cold Case Files (Documentary)
The Royle Family (Comedy)
The Office (Mockumentary/Comedy)
The IT Crowd (Comedy)
You (Drama)
Bob Ross (Painting)
Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (Documentary)
Doctor Foster (Drama)
Black Mirror (Sci-fi/Drama)
Don't F*ck with Cats (Documentary)
BBC iPlayer
This Country (Comedy)
Everyone that knows me is probably sick to death with me banging on about this show but I can't explain to you just how much I love it. It follows two twenty-something cousins from a small village of the Cotswolds, and the various eccentric local characters around them. In the style of a mockumentary much like The Office, if you didn't know it was a comedy then you would be forgiven for coming across it and thinking that it was real. As someone from the Cotswolds myself, everything about this is close to home. Everyone from the Cotswolds knows characters like these. The third and final series has just aired on iPlayer and my heart is broken that it is over. Get ready to HOWL.
Line of Duty (Police Drama)
Another one that I imagine most of you have watched but if not, get on it. Forget civilian criminals, Line of Duty officers are on the case of corrupt police officers. Another bingeworthy series that will have you like just one more episode...
Every single episode is currently on iPlayer and it's a 2000's classic. Just saying.Bog off Elaine.
Other mentions:
Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley (Documentary)
The Yorkshire Ripper Files (Documentary)
Everything with Louis Theroux (Documentaries)
W1A (Mockumentary/Comedy)
Amazon Prime
Ted Bundy: Falling For A Killer (Documentary)
A documentary from the point of view of the woman who was in Ted Bundy's life at the time of his horrific crimes. Lots of information and photographs in this series that I had never seen before, and I've consumed a lot of Ted Bundy information in my time.
The Fall (Drama)
Gillian Anderson. What more can I say.
The X-Files (Sci-Fi/Drama)
Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny. What more can I say.
Most Haunted (Paranormal Reality)
Doesn't matter whether you believe in the paranormal or not, every single episode is a ride! Watch for Yvette Fielding's hair journey if nothing else.
Other honourable mentions:
House (Hospital Drama)
Downton Abbey (Period Drama)
The Tudors (Period Drama)
The Office USA (Mockumentary/Comedy)
Freaks & Geeks (Comedy)
Please let me know what you're currently streaming in the comments so I can add them to my watch list!
Lots of love,
Vicky x
