Mind the Hollow… Bramble Nix walks tonight.

In the town of Pumpkin Hollow they say she only comes on Samhain night, when the veil is thinnest and the wind whistles like laughter through the chimney flues. Her name? Bramble Nix.

No one knows where she lives, exactly. Some say she sleeps beneath the old root cellar outside town, where the brambles grow too thick to pass. Others swear they’ve seen her reflection in the apple bobbing barrel - grinning - even when no one was standing there.

One year she switched the cider barrels, turning the mayor’s grand harvest toast into a bubbling truth potion. The secrets that spilled that night are still spoken of in whispers. Another year, every scarecrow in Pumpkin Hollow was found wearing mismatched boots and holding bouquets of thistles

And then there was the time she carved a pumpkin with a smile so wide and so knowing, no one dared extinguish its candle. It still sits on the steps of the apothecary, flame eternal, untouched by rot.

But all agree on this: when the lanterns flicker low and the pumpkins begin to rot just slightly sweet at the edges, she comes back.

She’s not evil, not exactly. Mischievous? Absolutely.

Those who claim to have seen Bramble Nix say she wears a tattered coat stitched with bat-wing panels, its sleeves trailing the ground like shadows at dusk. Her fingers are long, spindly, and ancient - always curled around a small pumpkin. Her heart, a dimly lit lantern? No one knows for sure.  She moves without a sound, but in her wake lingers the faint scent of cypress, spice, sandalwood and vanilla. On Samhain night, her scent deepens to incense smoke curling through wild woods, tangled with patchouli and earthy vetiver.

Children leave little offerings on their windowsills - thimble-sized pastries, crow feathers, shiny buttons - in hopes that Bramble Nix might leave them a charm or two in return. And some mornings after Samhain… they do find something. A golden wax seal. A perfectly preserved leaf. Once, a ring shaped like hands clasping a pumpkin - and no one’s ever been able to remove it.

And for those brave enough to wander the Hollow after dark? Folklore has it that a ribbon tied around your wrist marks you as friend, not foe.

So when the wind gets sharp, and the Hollow goes quiet, folks lock their doors early. They light an extra lantern. And they whisper, just softly:

“Mind the Hollow… Bramble Nix walks tonight.”
