STERLING SILVER
GENERAL INFO: STERLING SILVER JEWELS
925 Sterling Silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Fine silver (99.9% pure) is too soft for producing functional objects such as jewellery, and in Sterling Silver the silver is alloyed with other metals to give strength whilst preserving the malleability of the silver and a high precious metal content. The long and short of all this is - sterling silver is the perfect metal to choose if you are looking for longevity and value for money!
It is really important to remember that tarnishing is likely to occur at some point during your sterling silver pieces long life. This is not a manufacturing fault. The good news is that this process can 1. be slowed down with extra special care, and 2. sterling silver can be restored!
General Care
Remember many of our items contain natural stones and/or antiqued detailing to set the features off so even with sterling silver items please make sure to love your jewellery and remove them before prolonged contact with moisture, and at all times with sea/salt water, cosmetics, and any other cleaning chemicals and substances.
Avoid wearing your silver if you are going to be doing strenuous work with your hands. Silver is a very durable metal however due to natural properties of the metal, can still be malleable and become misshapen if care isn't taken when worn.
Cleaning
Did you know that Sterling Silver loves to be worn? No, really! The natural oils in your skin 'clean' the surface of the silver! But if your favourite jewel has been left on the side and is looking a little worse for wear, it is really easy to restore your sterling silver to its shiny best - simply polish with a clean and dry microfibre cloth!
If a deeper clean is required, you can also try a home made solution of baking soda and water, or non whitening, non gel toothpaste. Use a pea sized amount to polish using a clean cloth or kitchen roll. It's important that you love the stones in your jewellery too, so remember to avoid getting substances or solutions on any stones set in the silver. We love antiquing many of our pieces to set off the delicate detailing so also take care to keep cleaning substances away from these areas.
Storage
Always store your treasures in an airtight container. Sealable bags and zip lock pouches are an excellent, inexpensive option; if you would like us to include one in your order just add a note at checkout!
Gift boxes are great for presenting but not suitable for long term storage as they are not airtight.
